XLI AICA CONGRESS – 2007, Brazil : “The Institutionalization of the Contemporary Art : the Art Criticism, the Museums, the Biennials, the Art Deal”

The symposium will examine the role of Art Criticism, in relation to the present-day institutionalisation of Contemporary Art.

Any examination of changes in Art and Art Criticism on the global scene presupposes the need to discuss the ways in which contemporary art is presented and communicated to an audience, as well as the role that is played by the main agents of legitimisation – the museums, the biennials, the art market, and the educational system, as a whole.

We can easily recognise the power of the art system to define and, if necessary, redefine, the parameters of artistic production. We must then ask what impact the art critic and the institutionalisation of contemporary art have had on our understanding of contemporary art. Do art criticism and curating still have a fundamental role to play? And is it legitimate for the art critic to engage directly in curatorial work?

The XLI AICA Congress will be held in Brazil, in the city of São Paulo, from 1-4 October 2007 and will comprise a full programme of visits and discussions. The programme for each day will be arranged in two parts:
- 09.00 to 11.30 hours. Visits to cultural institutions in the city of São Paulo.
- 14.00 to 20.00 hours. Lectures and round tables in the Amphitheatre of the University of São Paulo.

This will be the second AICA Congress to be held in Brazil, after a gap of 47 years. The first such event was the Extraordinary Congress of 1959, organised by the art critic, Mario Pedrosa, to celebrate the forthcoming inauguration of the country’s new capital, Brasilia, designed by Oscar Niemeyer.
